A mixed number looks something like 3 1/2, read "3 and one half." Writing that as addition would be 3 + 1/2. To write it as a single fraction, you need to change it into an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator (2) by the whole number (3) and then adding the numerator to it (1). So 2*3=6 then 6+1=7. Then you put the 7 over the original denominator (2), So as a single fraction 3 and 1/2 is 7/2
