I am not sure if a 4th grader would solve the problem as follows.
x = apple slices
3x = orange slices
x + 3x = 32
4x = 32
x = 8
x = 8 apple slices
3x = 3(8) = 24
24 + 8 = 32
x = apple slices
3x = orange slices
x + 3x = 32
4x = 32
x = 8
x = 8 apple slices
3x = 3(8) = 24
24 + 8 = 32

Easiest way to start to learn how to do this is like this.
Write down 3 "o"s then one "a"
ooo
a
Now you have 4 of everything. Keep doing that until you have 32.
oooooo
aa
There is 8.
How many do you end up with?
(Note: there is a way to do this with math and algebra, but it's usually not taught in 4th grade. Right now, get the visual sense of what is happening.)
