1.Robin has a certain number of dimes in his pocket. If the dimes were pennies, he would have $1.08 less than he has now. How many dimes does he have in his pocket?

Each dime converted to a penny decreases his holdings by 9 cents. Since he would have $1.08 less, he has 1.08/0.09 = 12 dimes. He could have any number of coins other than dimes.
