Unless there is a new way taught for adding fractions, you can't do it like that.
You have to convert each mixed number to a fraction
3 2/9 = 29/9
5 1/8 = 41/8
Then you add
29/9 + 41/8
Find the LCD
232/72 + 369/72 = 601/72
601/72 divided by 2, multiply by 1/2
601/72 * 1/2 = 601/144 = 4 25/144

was the SUM, not the final answer, which is the average.
8 25/72 is correct for the sum.
You have to divide the sum by 2, for the average.
So however you were adding is correct.
