you have to change the demoninator in the fraction to be the same as the fraction you are adding to it by multiplying the whole fraction by a whole munber.
example
1/2 + 1/8 =
4*(1/2) + 1/8 =
4/8 + 1/8 = 5/8
example
1/2 + 1/8 =
4*(1/2) + 1/8 =
4/8 + 1/8 = 5/8
