is this your problem
(x^2 - 1)/1 divided by (x - 1)/(x + 5)?
if so, (x^2 - 1)/1 = x^2 - 1
to divide, invert the denominator and multiply, so,
(x^2 - 1) * (x + 5)/(x - 1)
does this help?
