The sun is not large enough to explode as a supernova) nor old enough to turn into a red giant and thereby end life on Earth in the next year. However, the latter is expected occur in a few billion years.

Other catastrophic events that could end life on Earth are (1) the collision with an asteroid larger than about 500 km or (2) the explosion of a "nearby" star into a supernova. Astronomers know of no asteroids or nearby stars large enough for this to happen.
