There is another way to do it, too, but it is much much longer. Frankly, I remember just a few conversion factors. I can get from feet to inches, inches to centimeters. After getting into the metric system, I have only factors of 10 to worry about so those conversions are easy.
12 inches = 1 foot
2.54 inches = 1 centimeter
100 centimeters = 1 meter
1000 meters = 1 kilometer.
As Anonymous points out, move from one to the other making sure the units cancel as we go along.
512 feet x (12 in/1 ft) x (2.54 cm/1 in) x (1 m/100 cm) x (1 km/1000 m) = ??
Note that feet cancels in the first conversion to leave inches, inches cancel in the second factor to leave cm, cm cancels in the next to leave meters, and m cancels in the last to leave km and that is the unit you want. As I point out, this is a much longer way of doing it but I only need to remember a few factors and I need all the space in my brain for other things.
