The Sr atom loses two electrons to chlorine to give it a +2 charge and that attracted to the negative Cl^- makes a relatively strong ionic bond. SrCl2 should have a high melting point, the solid crystal at room temperature should cleave neatly along crystal planes, etc, etc,.
