At the beginning, as the coaster clicks to the highest peak you feel the suspense of potential energy about to change — gravity pulls the train down the drop and produces acceleration that increases your velocity, launching the ride into motion. In the middle of the run you experience three different forces at once: gravity continually accelerates you toward Earth, the track’s normal force pushes on the cars and riders to change direction and provide the centripetal force needed for turns and loops (making you feel pressed into or lifted from your seat), and friction — including air resistance and wheel/track friction — opposes motion, converting mechanical energy to heat and gradually reducing speed. Finally, the brakes and friction bring acceleration back toward zero and the coaster slows to a stop, leaving you with the lingering sensation of inertia as your body resists the change; together gravity, the normal force, and friction govern every twist, speed change, and thrill of the ride.
