Good evening. Tonight we report on rabies, a dangerous zoonotic disease — an infection transmitted from animals to humans. Rabies is a virus that attacks the nervous system, usually spread by bites or saliva from infected mammals such as bats, raccoons, dogs or foxes. Protect yourself by avoiding wild or unfamiliar animals, vaccinating pets, and immediately washing any bite or scratch with soap and water. If exposure occurs, seek emergency care: treatment is prompt wound cleaning, rabies immunoglobulin, and a series of vaccines (post‑exposure prophylaxis) that are highly effective. Without timely treatment rabies is almost always fatal; with proper PEP, patients typically recover and avoid illness.
