Good evening. Tonight: rabies — a deadly zoonotic disease, meaning it spreads from animals to humans. Rabies is a viral infection affecting the brain and spinal cord, transmitted chiefly through bites or saliva of infected mammals like bats, raccoons and dogs. Early signs include fever and tingling, progressing to anxiety, confusion, hydrophobia, paralysis and death. Protect yourself by avoiding contact with wild animals, vaccinating pets, keeping wildlife away, and washing and seeking immediate care for any animal bite. Treatment after exposure requires prompt wound care, rabies immunoglobulin and a series of rabies vaccines; there is no effective treatment once symptoms appear. With timely post-exposure care rabies is preventable; without it, outcome is almost always fatal.
