Good evening. Tonight’s health report focuses on rabies, a zoonotic disease—meaning an illness transmitted from animals to people. Rabies is a viral infection that attacks the nervous system, typically spread through the saliva of infected mammals via bites or scratches. Early signs include fever and tingling; later stages bring agitation, confusion, hydrophobia, paralysis, and coma. To protect yourself, avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals, vaccinate pets, and wash any bite thoroughly, then seek medical care immediately. Treatment is highly effective if given before symptoms: human rabies immune globulin and a series of vaccines. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal; with prompt post-exposure care, however, full recovery is very likely.
