If I were the farmer, I’d think intercropping rubber with my tea could be a smart move because it gives me another source of income, more plant variety, and better protection against erosion and some pests in our rainforest climate. The downsides are that rubber trees take several years before they start producing latex, cost money and work to plant and care for, and their shade and root competition might cut into my tea’s yield. It also makes the farm harder to manage because I’d need to balance watering, fertilizing, and pruning for two crops. Overall, I’d try it only if I can afford the wait and plan the spacing well so the tea doesn’t suffer.
