Producers (plants, algae, some bacteria) make sugars by photosynthesis but still use cellular respiration (day and night) and release CO2. Consumers (animals, fungi, many bacteria) respire organic molecules for energy and release CO2 as well. Decomposers also produce CO2 during respiration.
