Jack was only a half hour outside of the city when the snow started falling. Since it was just past midnight and he had a full tank of gas, he was confident that he would make it to the cabin without having to stop. He increased his speed and drove into the snow-dappled night.
He was halfway to the cabin when the light flakes turned into a steady snowfall. Jack continued to drive into the snowstorm, even though there was no sign that it would end soon.
"I should put on my driving glasses so I can really concentrate," he reminded himself.
The steady snowfall made it difficult for Jack to see the lines in the road. Surrounded by the blowing snow he kept a careful watch in front of him. A flash of orange caught Jack’s eye at the tree just up ahead. He blinked hard trying to see more clearly through the snow coated windshield.
“What is that?” Jack wondered. He softly pressed the breaks and tried to get a better look as he crawled past the wide oak tree. Although he still wasn’t certain of what he was looking at, his gut told him that he should check it out. It could be someone that was stuck out in the blizzard and needed help.
As he climbed out of the car, the freezing wind whipped across his face and he pulled his fluffy coat tighter around him. He trudged through the already accumulating snow drifts toward the tree. “Oh my!” he said, arriving at the tree. There, in a small rut of the tree, was an orange tabby cat snuggled up with four tiny kittens. Jack knew he couldn’t just leave them out in the snow.
He hiked back to his car and returned with a cardboard box from his trunk. He arranged a few old shirts from his suitcase in the bottom and set the box near the tree. “Alright,” Jack said to the tabby and her kittens, “let’s get you someplace warmer.” After a few minutes, Jack was able to tenderly coax them into the warm box. As he carried them back to his car, he was thankful he’d put on his glasses or he might have missed them.
