There are several good articles in here. It looks as if it's celebrated around Sept 20 or 21 by our calendar each year.

Wikipedia has the information about Mid-Autumn Festival.

It's not similar to the U.S. Thanksgiving. Our holiday is essentially a harvest festival. It celebrates the feast held by the first settlers in Massachusetts in 1621 who gave thanks to God that they'd had good crops and would have enough food for the winter months.

Today, Thanksgiving is a time when families get together for a feast. Common foods include roast turkey, bread stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, fruit or vegetable salad, a green vegetable, mincemeat pie, pumpkin pie, and other kinds of pie. I usually fix dried sweet corn as this method of preserving sweet corn has a long history in my family.
