Large parts of the land were covered by forests of conifers, cycads, and ferns. Flowering plants were rare or just beginning to evolve. Dinosaurs were the most common big animals on land. There were giant long-necked sauropods like Brachiosaurus that ate leaves high in the trees. Fast meat-eating theropods like Allosaurus hunted other dinosaurs. Some dinosaurs walked on two legs; others walked on four. Small mammals lived in burrows and were mostly active at night. Pterosaurs flew above the trees, using wings made of skin stretched over long fingers. Oceans were full of life too, with ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs swimming like big sharks. Ammonites with coiled shells floated in the seas and were common prey for marine predators. Coral reefs and shallow seas were rich with fish and sea plants. Insects like dragonflies and early beetles buzzed around the plants. The supercontinent Pangaea was breaking apart, so new seas formed and coastlines changed. Volcanoes were common and sometimes covered areas with ash and lava. The air probably smelled like damp plants, wet soil, and sometimes smoke near volcanoes. Overall, the world looked green and wild, with towering trees, huge plant-eaters grazing, and sharp-toothed hunters prowling the land.
