About 90% of Australians live on the coast rather than the dry interior because the coastal fringe offers far more reliable water, milder climate, fertile soils and access to ports and trade, all of which support agriculture, industry and large cities. European settlement and subsequent economic development concentrated around harbors and rivers, so infrastructure, jobs, universities and services grew there and attracted continuing migration. In contrast the Outback is largely arid or semi‑arid with low, unpredictable rainfall, poor soils, extreme temperatures and vast distances, so only low‑density pastoralism and mining are viable and there is little incentive or capacity for large towns. The result is a highly urbanized, coast‑focused population clustered in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide where living conditions and economic opportunities are far better than in the interior.
