Once upon a time, there lived a very poor shoemaker and his wife. The shoemaker had only enough leather left to make one pair of shoes. He cut the leather and went to bed. He would make the shoes in the morning.

The next morning, the old man was surprised to discover that the shoes were already made! A rich man bought the shoes and left a tip. The shoemaker bought leather for two pairs of shoes, cut the leather, and went to bed.

Again, the shoes were already made. He sold them and bought leather for four pairs of shoes. He cut the leather, but this time, he didn't go to bed. He and his wife hid to find out who was making the shoes. It was two elves wearing only rags!

They wanted to thank the elves, so the next day the shoemaker made them some shoes and his wife made them some clothes. That night, they left the clothes out, instead of leather. The elves were thrilled! Everyone lived happily ever after.
