The Masai Giraffe
The Masai giraffe is the tallest of all species of giraffe. It is also known as the Kilimanjaro giraffe. The Masai giraffe makes its home in the African Savanna, south of the Sahara Desert. These giraffes feed on the moist leaves of the Acacia tree. Acacia wood is very strong and this makes it a good choice for construction. Since these leaves contain a lot of water, the Masai giraffes can survive without drinking water from other sources for weeks at a time.
Fully grown, a male Masai giraffe reaches a height of about 19 feet. It is the tallest land animal on the surface of the Earth. The spots and the markings on the male Masai giraffes are slightly darker than the ones on the females. Interestingly, the markings of a dominant male Masai giraffe are darker than those of the rest of the herd. Scientists have not been able to determine how this happens. The Masai giraffes do not have spots or coloring below their knees.
The bottoms of the Masai giraffe's legs are very skinny and sticklike. People often wonder how giraffes are able to carry their weight so gracefully on such spindly legs. The design of their legs and hooves makes the Masai giraffes immensely powerful. They are able to ward off their predators with a single kick. Masai giraffes are very fast runners. They can maintain a speed of 35 miles per hour if needed.
