Pressing the Right Keys
by Courtney Goff

Jennifer had been wanting to learn to play the piano since she was four years old. She asked her mother if she could take lessons.
“I will have to see how much piano lessons cost,” Jennifer’s mother said.
Jennifer’s mom called Miss Percy, a piano teacher, to see how much piano lessons would cost.
On Saturday, Jennifer and her mom went to Miss Percy’s house. Jennifer had never seen such a large piano before. She sat down on the bench with Miss Percy who showed Jennifer where her fingers should be placed on the keys. Jennifer pushed down on one of the keys to hear the sound it made. She loved the way the noise filled the room. Miss Percy gave Jennifer a book with notes to practice on her small piano at home.
Jennifer practiced one hour each day until her next lesson. Jennifer’s mom would sit next to her and encouraged her. The next Saturday, Miss Percy taught Jennifer her first song, “Hot Cross Buns.” By the end of the lesson, Jennifer knew the song by heart. She could not wait to get home to play it for her family.
After one month of lessons, it was time for the first recital. Each student would play one song on a large stage at the high school. Jennifer could not sleep the night before the recital, and she practiced her song over and over until she knew it was perfect. Her mom had even bought Jennifer a new dress to wear.
Jennifer’s parents and grandparents came to see her play. They sat proudly in the front row. When it was her turn to play, Jennifer took a deep breath and walked out onto the stage. She sat down at the piano bench and began to play her song. When she was finished, Jennifer heard everyone start clapping. Standing up, she looked into the audience and took a bow while smiling the whole time.
