Laila woke up and bolted upright in bed. Her mind helmet had just woken her up again. It had fallen off and was making an ear-splitting beeping noise. “Return helmet to head! Return helmet to head!” it chanted repeatedly.
“Why can’t you just let me sleep?” she groaned.
“Return helmet to head!”
“All right, if it’ll shut you up,” Laila mumbled, putting the helmet back on.
The helmet’s job was to read Laila’s thoughts. Laila had been wearing it for as long a she could remember. She was only a baby when Gabby Santos got elected President of Earth. President Santos made sure that every world citizen owned a mind helmet. She said that the helmets made life safer and easier.
It wasn’t illegal to take off your helmet, but Laila had never seen anyone without one on. It seemed to her that people had forgotten how to live without the helmet reading their minds. People didn’t stepped outside to check the weather because their helmets knew the temperature. Hardly anyone had clocks anymore because mind helmets could tell time.
“You are wondering what time it is,” the helmet whispered. “It is 6:30 a.m.”
Laila got out of bed and opened her closet. As she chose her outfit, her mind helmet reported on her dreams.
“At 3:42 a.m., you dreamed you were swimming in the ocean with a dolphin,” it whispered. “According to dream experts, dolphins represent happiness.” Laila tried to ignore the dreamreport while she dressed, but as usual, the helmet was one step ahead of her. “Now you are trying to ignore me,” it said.
It was impossible for Laila to ignore the constant voice in her ears. She imagined being alone with her thoughts, and she predicted that the silence would be beautiful. She decided that she would find out today.
“I’m going to take this annoying thing off,” she said aloud. “From now on, I won’t have to share my thoughts with anyone — or anything!”
Laila took off her helmet and threw it on the bed. Seconds later, the helmet started beeping. “Return helmet to head!”
The sound made Laila cringe, but it faded as she closed the door behind her and headed toward the kitchen.
