Pangaea began to form in the late Carboniferous, about 335 million years ago, and was largely assembled by the early Permian (around 300 million years ago). It remained intact through the late Paleozoic and into the early Mesozoic, then began to rift apart in the Early Jurassic, roughly 200–175 million years ago. Exact timings are approximate and based on geological and paleomagnetic evidence.
