Early in Earth’s history a global magma ocean cooled and differentiated, letting the first solid crust form from solidified basalt and rising lighter minerals that built primitive continental crust. Movement of early proto-tectonic plates—young oceanic plates and nascent continental blocks—caused spreading, collision and subduction. Those processes created the first continents, mountains and ocean basins and continuously reshaped and recycled Earth’s surface.
