Cordelia sighed, readjusting the heavy velvet cape once more. Ariel rapped on the door and leaned into the dressing chamber.
"You look so dignified," Ariel said admiringly. "Royal, even."
"I'm not dignified," replied Cordelia, turning away from the mirror. "And I certainly don't feel royal. We all have to wear these terrible outfits for Father's welcome banquet."
Cordelia's father had been unexpectedly appointed the ruler of the Interplanetary Alliance just the week before. Every day since had been a whirlwind of etiquette lessons, formal dinners, and stilted media interviews that were broadcast across the solar system.
"Well other people certainly think you're royal. I overheard two of the new serving girls buzzing about getting a glimpse of the honorable Queen Cordelia at the banquet," remarked Ariel.
Cordelia held up her hands in protest. "Oh, stop! I'm not 'honorable,' and I'm definitely not a 'queen.'" But the serving girls were half right. One day Cordelia would be a queen. And that would be the day when all her dreams of becoming an intergalactic explorer would be over for good.
Still, Cordelia allowed Ariel to retie her cape and fix her hair all while listening to Ariel talk about how glamorous the banquet would be. Cordelia barely heard. She kept gazing at the spot under her bed where she'd hidden her explorer training manual. Even though there were many eyes on her family, she hoped she could find a way to resume her secret training.

She is Cordelia's servant.
Reason: Ariel helps retie Cordelia's cape and fix her hair and is present in the dressing chamber, actions typical of an attendant/servant. The passage gives no sign she’s an instructor or a sibling.
