They move toward each other (a convergent boundary). If one plate is denser (usually oceanic) it dives beneath the other (subduction), producing deep earthquakes, volcanism and a trench; if both are buoyant continental plates they crumple, thicken and uplift to form mountain ranges with lots of thrust faults and shallow earthquakes.
