Salmon hatch in freshwater streams and rivers and then swim out to the ocean. They spend anywhere from one to five years in the ocean before maturing enough to mate. When it is time, salmon swim upstream, back to the place where they hatched, to mate and lay their own eggs. In the presence of predators, salmon will hide by resting motionless on the bottom of a riverbed or using rocks and logs to hide themselves.
