I believe the US decision to invade Iraq in 2003 was incorrect because it was based on flawed and misrepresented intelligence about weapons of mass destruction — the Iraq Survey Group later found no active WMD stockpiles — and on contested links to Al-Qaeda. The invasion and subsequent occupation produced large human and economic costs (with estimates of hundreds of thousands of deaths and trillions of dollars spent) and helped create a security vacuum that fueled insurgency and regional instability. While removing Saddam Hussein ended a brutal dictatorship, the poor planning for postwar governance and reconciliation meant the negative consequences outweighed the intended benefits.
