Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 in Virginia, on a plantation. His father was a man of great physical strength. Thomas was also as healthy as his father. As a boy, Thomas lived an out-of-door life. He loved swimming or paddling his boat in the river near his home. At seventeen, he entered William and Mary College in Virginia. Jefferson studied very hard in college, sometimes for fifteen hours a day. Thomas Jefferson married at the age of twenty nine. He and his wife lived in a home called Monticello. By the time he reached thirty years of age, he had become famous for his literary abilities. He wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence.
