On November 2, a beluga whale gave birth to a calf at the Zoo of Valencia, in Spain. It is Europe's first captive beluga birth. The gray-blue calf weighed nearly 200 pounds and was more than three feet long. Eight-year-old Yulka, the calf's mother, is the youngest beluga to give birth in a zoo. There are only 20 baby belugas in aquariums worldwide. Beluga whales usually live for 35 to 50 years. Their white skin helps to camouflage them in icy waters like those of the Arctic Ocean. Whale watchers will have to wait a month to see the new calf.
