For example, in The Importance of Being Earnest Jack makes up a fake brother named "Ernest" and uses that name to live a more fun life in town. This shows he cannot be himself in public because the rules and people’s judgments push him to lie instead of being honest. Also, Algernon pretends to have an ill friend called "Bunbury" so he can skip duties and say he is caring while he really goes out to enjoy himself. This proves that people create fake stories to keep a good image and avoid showing their true wants. Together, these examples show Wilde’s idea that society forces people to act falsely and that this pretense is both silly and telling about how unfair social rules can be.
