All three matter, but as an artist I find the composition view most important. Composition is the organizing principle that shapes how content and subject are perceived: it controls the visual hierarchy, focal points, rhythm, balance, and the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work. Good composition can make a simple subject read as powerful or a complex subject read clearly; poor composition will confuse the message no matter how meaningful the content is.

Practically that means I focus on framing, value and color contrasts, scale and proportion, negative space, leading lines, and intentional asymmetry or symmetry to support the mood and meaning I want. Content (what the piece is about) and subject (what’s depicted) remain essential—composition is simply the tool that turns them into an effective visual experience. In projects where the message itself must dominate (e.g., activist work), content can become primary, but composition still determines whether that content is communicated successfully.
