Chemosynthesis is when bacteria use chemicals from the Earth (like hydrogen sulfide or methane) instead of sunlight to make food in places such as deep-sea vents or hot springs. Those bacteria are eaten by other animals, so the energy and chemicals they make get passed up the food chain and recycled through the ecosystem.
