Ozone is a gas made of three oxygen atoms, and "good" ozone lives high up in the stratosphere as the ozone layer. That good ozone absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and protects people, animals, and plants. "Bad" ozone forms lower down in the troposphere near the ground when pollutants react in sunlight and becomes a big part of smog. Ground-level ozone is harmful because it can hurt your lungs, make breathing hard, and damage crops and trees.
