Conserving biodiversity also yields direct economic returns—through ecotourism, pharmaceuticals, and ecosystem services—so protecting species is an investment in our own long-term prosperity.

Critics argue that conservation is too costly or that resources should be allocated to more immediate human needs, but that presents a false choice: the costs of inaction are often far greater and less reversible. Targeted, science-driven conservation can be efficient and scalable—protecting keystone species, restoring critical habitats, and enforcing anti-poaching laws produces outsized benefits for entire ecosystems. Prioritization and pragmatic triage are sensible, but they should guide strategy, not justify apathy; allowing species to vanish erodes natural capital and limits options for adaptation as conditions change.
