Today I went to Abasto Mall to buy presents for my family and I feel really proud of how it turned out. The mall was busy and full of music; I walked under the old red brick arches that used to be the Mercado de Abasto and into the bright shopping area. First I stopped at a small boutique on the second floor near a big mural and chose a soft silk scarf and a small bottle of floral perfume for Mamá, Ana (my mother). The shopkeeper wrapped the scarf in tissue paper and put the perfume in a little box right in front of the cashier. Then I wandered to a cozy bookstore by the food court and picked out a new YA novel and a purple beanie for my hermana, Lucía (my sister), because she loves reading and always borrows my hats. On the ground floor I found a sports store with big glass windows and bought a blue-and-yellow soccer jersey for my hermano, Mateo (my brother), since he always plays with his friends on weekends. I paid with the money I had saved from chores and felt nervous handing over my wallet, but the cashier smiled and said I chose great gifts. After buying everything I got them wrapped in festive paper at a gift-wrapping counter near the central atrium. The mall smelled like coffee and churros, and I waited for the wrapping while watching people pass by with shopping bags. Walking home I kept picturing their faces when they opened the presents, especially Mateo jumping if he sees the jersey. I can’t wait to give everything to Mamá Ana, Lucía my hermana, and Mateo my hermano — I hope they like what I picked.
