Cultural Diffusion in Southwest Asia
In modern times, Southwest Asia, like other parts of the world, has experienced cultural diffusion, which is the spread of ideas, technology, and ways of life from one place to another. Diffusion has brought many ideas from Europe and other Western countries to the region.
Different groups have reacted to modern ideas in different ways. People in some countries, including Israel, Lebanon, and Jordan, have ways of life similar to people in Europe or the United States. They have adopted modern technologies such as smartphones and social media, and Western ways of life such as clothing styles, entertainment, and education.
Some conservative Muslims also accept many modern technologies but are cautious about other modern practices in order to preserve traditional values of Islam. For example, the government of Iran enforces strict observance of Sharia, or the Islamic law code.
