According to a recent survey, people between the ages of 17 and 40 years spend more than two hours each day networking on social media. Social media helps a person to make new friends. Along with social connections, social media helps in spreading information faster than any other form of media. A study by the Institute of Social Trends found that more than fifty percent of people learn about news and current events through social media.
Social media helps to create awareness amongst people regarding social and political issues within a community. It also helps students to create groups where students from different universities connect with each other. Some social media sites let users create an account through which they upload pictures or videos. Each account is identified by a unique handle.
Like every coin, using social media has its flip side as well. Though social media has made social connections easier, it has also caused people to be distant from each other. Instead of meeting a friend physically, people these days prefer to chat on social media. Youngsters are so used to chatting online that they feel awkward meeting someone in a real face-to-face situation. Communication within families has also declined as people prefer spending more time on social media.
In sum, using social media has its pros and cons. It up to a person to reflect upon its pros and cons and use social media wisely.
