As wind and ocean currents move across Earth's surface, the planet itself is rotating from west to east. As a result, the currents appear to travel along a curved path instead of a straight one. Wind and water currents traveling from the equator toward the poles bend eastward, while currents traveling from the poles toward the equator bend westward. The Coriolis effect explains why hurricanes spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

As a high school football athlete who hopes to compete in college, I've already sustained several serious injuries, so I'm concerned about my body holding up. So when my coach told me ballet could help strengthen my body, I was willing to consider signing up for lessons. I first enrolled in group lessons at the Ballet for All studio, but was put off by the fact that most of my classmates were six to ten years younger than me! I later enrolled in private lessons, which were much more targeted and appropriate, but also far too expensive. On a positive note, I've found ballet to be strenuous, demanding, and even enjoyable. More than that, over the past six months, my coach and I have noticed a dramatic improvement in my speed, balance, flexibility, and focus. I've also experienced noticeably fewer injuries this season. That level of success attracted attention and caused other football players from my team to want to join in. Ballet for All graciously created a group class for us so that we didn't have to pay the hefty price for private instruction and we weren't trapped with grade-schoolers in their beginner's course. Now, hopefully, our team can put its newfound skills to use on the football field so we can win our first state championship.
