Choose Your Own Plant Experiment

During this entire Unit, you will perform an experiment with plants. You will choose what the experiment will be. It can be on how different substances (such as coffee) affect seed germination. It can be something to the effect of: does yelling at one plant and singing to another plant affect growth? Keep in mind the variables. If you choose seed germination, make sure that you choose the same seed. If you choose yelling or singing at a plant, make sure it is the same type of plant growing in the same environmental conditions.

Your experiment is of your choosing. In each activity, there will be certain items due.

You need to decide what your experiment will be, form a problem sentence and hypothesis, and do background research. You will need to start your experiment as soon as possible so the plants have a chance to germinate/grow. You can look on the internet for ideas if you cannot think of one on your own.

I will test how watering with diluted brewed coffee affects the germination and early growth of radish seeds. Problem: Does using a diluted coffee solution instead of plain water change the germination rate of radish seeds? Hypothesis: If radish seeds are watered with a diluted coffee solution, then fewer seeds will germinate and seedlings will grow more slowly than seeds watered with plain water because caffeine and the acidity of coffee can inhibit seed metabolism and affect nutrient availability. Background research shows that caffeine can reduce seed germination in some species and that coffee residues can lower soil pH and alter microbial activity, both of which influence seedling establishment. I will control variables by using the same radish seed packet, identical soil and pots, equal light and temperature conditions, and the same volume and schedule of watering for all groups; only the watering solution will differ (plain water vs. specified coffee dilution). I will begin the experiment immediately so seeds have time to germinate, record germination daily for about 10–14 days, and compare germination percentage and seedling vigor to determine the effect.
