The biosphere and atmosphere are tightly linked: plants and algae remove carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis while animals, microbes and plants return carbon dioxide (and methane) by respiration and decomposition, regulating atmospheric greenhouse gases and climate. Vegetation also transpires large amounts of water vapor, affecting humidity and cloud formation, and emits volatile organic compounds that form aerosols and influence cloud condensation and air chemistry. These exchanges create feedbacks—changes in climate alter ecosystems, and changes in ecosystems (for example deforestation or wetland loss) alter atmospheric composition and weather patterns.
