The water cycle moves water. The cycle is a circle. It keeps going. Water comes in 3 forms. It can be solid, liquid or gas. The sun heats ocean water. Some of it evaporates into a gas. It goes into the air.
A Water Cycle diagram made up of arrows. The cycle shows evaporation from lakes and streams to condensation and precipitation. The precipitation on the mountains turns into surface runoff and groundwater. The trees also show transpiration with an arrow to a cloud.
Then it forms clouds. This is called condensation. Water drops grow inside. They get bigger. Then water falls! This is called precipitation. It can be rain or snow.
A diagram showing four different types of precipitation. A section is colored yellow and labeled warm air. The yellow section covers from Rain to Sleet. The far left shows rain, then freezing rain, sleet, then snow. The top of the diagram shows clouds with snowflakes.
Some places get lots of rain or snow. Other places do not get much. When the water cycle is dry for a long time, it is called a drought.
A diagram showing a flat map of the world. It is titled Land- only precipitation percentiles feb 2013 N O A A’s National Climate Data Center. There are 7 different colors undre the map. The map shows different areas with the colors on them.
There is water in the oceans. There is water on land. There is water in the air. We can see how much water there is. We can see it change. We need water to live!
A diagram titled Distribution of Earth’s Water. The diagram shows 3 rectangular prisms. The first rectangular prism is labeled Earth’s water. It is broken into two parts, Saline. ocean in parentheses, 97 percent and fresh water, 3 percent. The second rectangular prism is labeled Freshwater. It is broken into 3 parts. Ice caps and glaciers, 68 point 7 percent. Ground water, 30 point 1 percent. The last part is labeled other, zero point 9 percent. The last rectangular prism is labeled fresh surface water with liquid in parentheses. It is broken into 3 parts: lakes, 87 percent, swamps, 11 percent and rivers 2 percent.
