- Jack: a man-eating giant who lived at the top of the beanstalk (and the danger of falling from the beanstalk).
- Hansel and Gretel: being lost/abandoned in the forest and being captured and eaten by a wicked witch.

2. How did Jack and Gretel escape from the characters that threatened them?
- Jack escaped by stealing the giant’s treasures and then chopping down the beanstalk so the giant fell to his death.
- Gretel escaped by tricking/pushing the witch into the oven (so the witch could not harm them), and then she and Hansel ran off with the witch’s riches.

3. What role did magic or fantasy play in each story?
- Jack and the Beanstalk: magic is central (magic beans that grow a giant beanstalk, a hen that lays golden eggs, a singing harp) and drives the whole adventure.
- Hansel and Gretel: fantasy appears in the witch and her edible gingerbread house (and in some versions witch’s spells); the fairy-tale danger and the candy house create the enchanted, dangerous setting.

4. How were the endings of both stories similar?
- In both stories the children defeat the threat, return home safely, and come away with wealth that improves their family’s situation.

5. One similarity and one difference between Jack and Hansel & Gretel’s adventure
- Similarity: Both stories end with the children overcoming a dangerous adult villain and gaining treasure.
