Let the height of the removed bottom-left rectangle be x. The full width is 8 + 2 = 10, so the full height (the side labeled ?) is x + 3. The closet area is

10(x + 3) − 8x = 2x + 30 = 36.

So 2x = 6 and x = 3, hence ? = x + 3 = 6 feet.
