World War II started mainly because Germany was angry about the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression made countries unstable, and leaders like Hitler, Mussolini, and Japan’s military wanted more land. The war officially began when Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and many countries had to join the fight. Big events included the Battle of Britain, Germany invading the Soviet Union, Japan bombing Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the Allied D-Day invasion in 1944. The Holocaust and huge battles killed millions, and in 1945 the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to make Japan surrender. After the war, Europe was destroyed, millions were homeless, the United Nations was created to try to keep peace, and the U.S. and the Soviet Union became superpowers which started the Cold War.
