The Arts and Crafts movement opened new educational and work opportunities for women by valuing handcrafts and design. Many women trained and worked as designers and makers — especially in textiles, embroidery, bookbinding, and ceramics — were able to sell their work or teach, and some (for example May Morris) gained leadership roles. At the same time the movement often reinforced traditional domestic roles by elevating “domestic” crafts, so women’s gains were frequently tied to home-oriented arts rather than full equality in the wider art world.
