Rembrandt is considered one of the greatest etchers because he combined technical mastery of printmaking with a deeply expressive, painterly vision: his prints show a wide tonal range, sensitive handling of light and shadow, inventive compositions, and highly varied, lively marks that convey character and atmosphere. He raised etching from a reproductive craft to an original art form by treating the copper plate like a sketchbook, experimenting freely, and producing many distinct “states” of a single plate as he refined ideas.

Rembrandt used several specific techniques in his etchings. He drew through an acid-resistant ground with an etching needle and bitten the exposed lines in acid to create the basic etched line. He often added drypoint lines by scratching directly into the plate with a sharp needle; these drypoint burrs hold ink and produce soft, velvety blacks. He also reworked plates with engraving (cutting lines with a burin) when he wanted very crisp, controlled marks.

He manipulated tone by leaving ink on the plate surface (plate tone) and by selectively wiping the plate before printing to create midtones and subtle gradations, rather than relying only on line. He varied biting times and rebitings to make lines of different depths so they printed with different strengths, and he used scraping and burnishing to reduce or lighten areas—techniques that let him create highlights and adjust compositions over several states. Finally, he used a wide variety of mark-making (cross-hatching, broken lines, dots, and energetic strokes) to suggest texture, form, and atmosphere in a manner very close to his painting style.
