Of the three areas, I think desegregation of schools was the most important because schooling shapes children’s opportunities and attitudes for a lifetime. The NAACP’s legal challenge that produced Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 attacked the legal basis of "separate but equal," and the crisis over the Little Rock Nine in 1957 showed how federal intervention could enforce constitutional rights. Integrating schools not only opened access to better resources and college and jobs for Black students, it also forced communities to confront segregation in daily life and helped change public opinion. That legal precedent and the moral attention given to school cases also helped pave the way for later civil rights laws and challenges in buses, public accommodations, and voting. Although implementation was slow and met with resistance, the long-term effect on social mobility and on dismantling legalized segregation makes school desegregation the most consequential of the three.
