Miguel Hidalgo is best known for the "Grito de Dolores" (Sept. 16, 1810), which launched the Mexican War of Independence. He did not stop a rebellion in Dolores, did not defeat the Spanish government, and did not collaborate with peninsulares (his supporters were mainly indigenous, mestizos and some criollos).
